  • The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)
    In his State of the Union speech in January 2003, President Bush announced a 5-year, $15 billion initiative to fight HIV/AIDS. Since that announcement Congress has appropriated an unprecedented amount of unilateral aid for international HIV/AIDS programs. Unfortunately this increased funding has come with harmful restrictions around commercial sex workers, abstinence-only education, and the use of generic medications.
  • U.S. HIV Prevention Funding: a Question and Answer Resource The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has focused its HIV/AIDS advocacy over the past two years on removing the ineffective, ideological restriction that one third of our HIV prevention funding be spent on abstinence-until-marriage programs.   • PEPFAR Reauthorization
    Under PEPFAR, Congress has appropriated an unprecedented amount of unilateral aid for international HIV/AIDS programs. Each year has seen funding levels increase and with PEPFAR up for reauthorization next year, Bush has announced intentions to officially double the funding levels for the next five years. The reauthorization process provides an opportunity to erase the ideological restrictions on U.S. prevention funding.   • The PATHWAY Act of 2007 (Protection Against Transmission of HIV for Women and Youth Act of 2007
    This bill has been the focus of our advocacy leading up to the reauthorization of PEPFAR. We are asking that its provisions requiring a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy to address the vulnerabilities of women and girls and striking the one third abstinence-until-marriage earmark be rolled into PEPFAR reauthorization.
